The prevention of back injuries to employees was the main topic of discussion at the National Back Exchange Conference held at Leicester recently. Speaking at the conference, Professor Sayeed Khan stressed on the need to minimize back injuries by using ergonomic solutions, especially in view of a loss of nearly 4.1 million working days each year due to back problems.

In his talk titled “Getting work to work for you”, Professor Khan, who is a board member of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and a medical adviser for EEF, pointed out the significance of implementing ergonomically suitable designs within the workplace. He said this would go a long way in reducing and preventing the instance of back problems among employees.

In his presentation, Professor Khan said that ergonomic solutions improve working conditions for all employees throughout the organisation, and not just the ones with existing back problems. He said that changing the work process and the style of functioning not only show that the company cares for its employees, but also improve the quality of work throughout the organisation.

While pointing out that back disorders are common to workers in the UK, he said that returning to office and taking an active interest in work can help prevent any long- term incapacity.

However, Professor Khan made it clear that this could only be actualised if the senior officers of the company work hand-in-hand with the sufferers to change the situation.

He added that it is always better to make improvements before the mishap, because it will not only help the employees but also save the time and money of employers.
